Major Drugs of Abuse
Drug abuse trends have
fluctuated in the country for many decades. Some drugs become more popular at
times than others but the main street drugs have remained in use. These include
cocaine and crack, heroin, ecstasy, LSD, marijuana and methamphetamine.
Prescription drug addiction is much more common in today's culture,
which is very unfortunate because it is a created condition. The wide variety
of painkillers, tranquilizers, sedatives and stimulants that have flooded the
market and the promotion from pharmaceutical companies, liberal presribing
practices from doctors and availability on the web have created a major scene
in which more young people are trying these drugs for the first time than they
are marijuana in many cases.

Common Drugs of Abuse
Alcohol is the most abused
substance in America. It's social acceptability and availability make it seem
less dangerous, but alcohol claims more lives than all of the others combined.
Someone doesn't have to be an all-day drinker to have an alcohol abuse probelm
that needs to be helped. Sometimes it may be only a moderate amount every day
or periods of heavy drinking spread out. It could be wine, beer or
liquor.
Prescription drugs that
are abused include narcotic painkillers such as hydrocodone and oxycodone.
Brand name examples are Vicodin, Lortab, OxyContin and Percocet.Another growing
catogory of prescription drug abuse includes benzodiazepines (benzos) such as
Xanax, Valium, Klonopin and Ativan. These are sedatives that have a very high
potential for abuse that are unfortunately often carelessly prescribed to
executives by doctors.
Sometimes the pressure to perform at work or school and function
with very little sleep will lead a young person or adult to some type of
stimulant. This could include a prescription stimulant like Ritalin, Dexedrine
and Adderall. All three are very powerfully addictive stimulants that have a
high abuse potential and toxic level.
There may be a wide variety of drugs
that are abused in this day in age. With the massive onslaught of prescription
drugs continually hitting the market and the false credo of taking a pill for
every ill, there are many substances that can get someone caught in the trap of
addiction.
Heroin and other opiates continue to be a major problem in the
U.S., especially with many former prescription painkiller abusers switching to
something stronger like heroin, morphine, fentanyl, methadone, etc.
Major stimulants that are abused include cocaine and crack,
amphetamines and methamphetamines. Cocaine use has remained high in the country
but the surge of meth abuse in the late 90's and earlier this decade as gone
back down a bit.
